Briggs & Stratton Generators, Holley Blue Pump Rebuild Kits, and Trailer Light Multimeter Tests: A Buyer's Guide

I'm the office administrator for a 42-person company. I order the generators, the trailer connectors, and the fuel pump rebuild kits around here, and I report to both operations and finance. Over the last few years, I've learned that the same product can be a great buy or a waste of money depending on what you're trying to solve. So before you ask "which one is best?", you need to know which situation you're in.

First, figure out what you're actually solving for

I sort requests into three paths:

  1. Backup power. You need a generator to run fixed equipment when the grid is down.
  2. Trailer wiring. You need lights to work so a trailer is legal and roadworthy.
  3. Fuel system repair. You have a carbureted vehicle or pump and the fuel pressure is wrong.

These sound different, but they all come back to the same question: how much is certainty worth? That's the angle I'm going to use, because in my job, uncertain savings aren't savings.

Scenario 1: Backup power—Briggs and Stratton 4375 generator vs. 6000 watt generator

This is the one I get asked most. The Briggs and Stratton 4375 generator is a solid portable option, but the number on the box is not the number that matters. The 4375 can surge to roughly 4,375 watts, but its running capacity is closer to 3,500 watts. The Briggs and Stratton 6000 watt generator is similar: it can surge to 6,000 watts, but the continuous running number is usually lower. (Note to self: I lost a day in 2022 because I assumed a generator's model number was its running watts. That was a cold night.)

If your load stays below 3,500 running watts, the 4375 may be enough. If you also have a well pump, a mini-split, or big startup surges from a compressor, step up to the 6000. The extra cost is usually less than the cost of a failed test or a shutdown.

Counterintuitive advice: don't automatically reach for the highest wattage portable generator on the market. A 12,000-watt portable unit sounds great, but it's heavy, loud, drinks fuel, and often requires a 50-amp inlet and a transfer switch. For most small commercial offices, 6,000 running watts is plenty. If your load calculation says you need more than 8,000 running watts, that's not a portable generator problem. That's a "call an electrician and plan a standby unit" problem.

There's also a time-certainty angle here. In March 2024, I paid $400 for guaranteed rush delivery of a generator part because the next morning was an event we couldn't move. The cheaper quote was "should be here by then." I'd already been burned twice by should-be delivery dates. The $400 was annoying, but the alternative was a $15,000 event with no power. In an emergency, paying for certainty is often the least expensive option.

Scenario 2: How to test trailer lights with a multimeter

If you have trailers in your fleet, the wrong answer isn't "replace the bulbs." Bulbs don't usually all die at once. The real issue is often a bad ground, a broken wire, or a connector pin that isn't making contact. That's why you need to know how to test trailer lights with a multimeter.

Here's the quick version I give to our maintenance guy:

  1. Set the multimeter to DC volts. The 20V range is fine for trailer lighting.
  2. Find the pinout for your trailer connector. Don't guess—pin positions vary between 4-pin, 6-pin, and 7-pin standards.
  3. Connect the black lead to the ground pin, or to a clean metal part of the trailer frame.
  4. Have someone activate the circuit you're checking, like left turn, right turn, brake, or taillight.
  5. Touch the red lead to the trailer-side pin and read the voltage.

If you see around 12V on the trailer side but the light stays dark, the problem is downstream: socket, bulb, or the ground wires at each light. If you see 0V on the trailer side, the problem is the connector, cable, or the tow vehicle's wiring. That one reading can save you from replacing parts that were never broken.

The most frustrating part of trailer electrical work is that a connection can look green and clean and still be dead because the wire inside the connector has pulled out. You'd think a visual check would catch it, but it often doesn't. That's why a $20 multimeter is more useful than most trailer light diagnostic tools.

Scenario 3: Holley blue fuel pump rebuild kit—rebuild or replace?

This one is more niche, but if you maintain older carbureted vehicles, the Holley blue fuel pump rebuild kit is a common fix. It usually includes a diaphragm, check valves, and gaskets. It costs much less than a new pump, and for a mild performance or stock application, it can bring a tired pump back to life.

But the decision depends on how the pump failed. If the pump runs but leaks fuel or doesn't build pressure, a rebuild kit is a reasonable first move. If the pump got hot, was run dry, or shows signs of melting around the housing, don't waste a weekend with a rebuild kit. The windings are likely damaged. Replace the pump.

Counterintuitive point: a rebuild kit won't fix a problem that lives in the fuel tank. I saw one pump fail twice in eight weeks. The first rebuild fixed the diaphragm. The second failure was caused by rust flakes and debris being sucked into the pump. After we put a filter before the pump and a filter after it, the rebuilt pump lasted more than a year.

As of January 2025, Holley blue rebuild kits are fairly easy to find, but verify your exact pump part number before ordering. There are lookalike kits that don't use the same check valves. In my experience, the cheap no-name kit isn't worth the invoice hassle when it doesn't pressure up properly. I'd rather buy from a dealer who can confirm the fit, even if it costs a few dollars more.

How to tell which scenario you're in

If you keep asking "what's the best generator?" before checking your actual load, you're in Scenario 1. Go look at the running watts on the spec sheet, not the surge watts on the front of the box. If you're asking "which trailer light is broken?", you're in Scenario 2. Get the multimeter out before you buy anything. If you're asking "can I rebuild my fuel pump?", you're in Scenario 3. Ask whether the pump was overheated or ran dry. If yes, replace. If no, rebuild and add filters.

And under all three scenarios, there's a common rule: when the deadline is real, choose the option that gives you certainty, even if it costs more. In my buying role, I've saved maybe $1,500 on small orders by using slower delivery, and then spent $3,000 fixing one missed deadline. I do not think that's a coincidence. It's just the price of uncertainty.

Honestly, I'm not sure why the generator industry still puts surge watts on the box and running watts in the manual. My best guess is that bigger numbers sell more, and enough buyers never read page 2. So you have to be the one who reads it. Different situations need different answers, and at least now you can sort yours into one of these three folders.
