With the Fluke 116, I can check supply and return air temperature using the built-in thermometer input. I can look at the microamp reading on a flame sensor. I can check whether the blower circuit is pulling the right current with a clamp accessory.

With the Fluke 10, you can check voltage and resistance, but you'll need a second tool for temperature. That means more walking back to the truck. On a service route, time is a line item.

Functionality conclusion: For general electrical work, the Fluke 10 is fine. For anyone whose title includes 'HVAC,' the 116's extra functions are not luxury options. They're time-saving tools.

First, locate the relay and identify the pins. Measure the coil resistance across terminals 85 and 86. A typical relay coil reads around 70 to 100 ohms. If it's open, the relay is bad. Then check the switch side: power should be present at terminal 30, and terminal 87 should show battery voltage when the relay is energized. The voltage drop between 30 and 87 should be near zero.

That test works with a Fluke 10. But if the circuit has phantom voltage from adjacent wiring, the Fluke 10 may read something that isn't really there.
