Use this checklist when you're the person responsible for ordering a GE transformer, a GE Multilin 850 transformer relay, or the control panel around them—but you're not the engineer who designs the protection system. I've been the administrative buyer for an industrial services company since 2020. I know that sounds basic, but I've seen purchase orders with nothing more than 'GE transformer 500 kVA.' That's how you end up with the wrong winding configuration. Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss the specification risk. A quote based on the wrong kVA is not cheaper—it's a legal error with copper inside.

Once the transformer is defined, the protection relay has to match the application. - Bill of materials with relay cutout sizes
- Test report from the factory acceptance test
- UL 508A labeling plan, if the panel is for a US industrial site
Here's where I almost made a serious mistake. I received a quote from a control panel builder who had mostly built fire pit control panels and lighting controls. A fire pit control panel is a real product with gas valves, ignition, and temperature limits. But it is not the same complexity as a transformer protection panel. That doesn't mean the builder is bad—it means the project risk is different. If you ask the wrong control panel builder, you get a panel that powers up but doesn't satisfy protection engineering.
Step 4: Ask What's Not Included in Every Quote
I've learned to ask what is not included? before asking what's the price. A transformer quote can look great and then add line items for relay programming, panel wiring, factory testing, shipping crating, and site commissioning. A transparent quote lists these fees upfront. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.
In my first year buying electrical equipment, I made the classic procurement error: I approved a low base price, then accepted a change order for engineering services. That was on me. Now I ask for line-item pricing. If a vendor gives you a total with no breakdown, that's a red flag.
Step 5: Check Lead Times, Documentation, and Spare Parts
As of January 2025, transformer and protection relay lead times are still not back to the old normal. Don't just ask 'when can you ship?' Ask for a production slot date, a finished date, and what happens if delivery is late. In 2024, I had a project delayed for six weeks because the relay arrived on time but the panel builder was still waiting for drawings. That was a communication failure: I said 'as soon as possible,' they heard 'whenever convenient.'
Check whether the relay model is current and supported. If it's a legacy model, ask about firmware updates and spare parts. For a GE transformer, include the nameplate drawing, test report, instruction manual, and serial number in the contract. If the vendor can't provide those, that's a deal-breaker.
Step 6: Plan Temporary Power Safely
Finally, plan how the relay will be tested on site. In almost every project, someone asks: 'can you plug an extension cord into a surge protector?' The direct answer is yes, if the extension cord is rated for the load, is in good condition, fully unwound, and the combined load doesn't exceed the surge protector's rating. But please don't do that for a transformer protection relay test.
Protection relays need stable control power and a reliable ground. Use a temporary distribution panel with proper breakers, or a dedicated circuit. A surge protector is not a substitute for a ground, and it does not turn a 16 AWG zip cord into a feeder.
Final Checklist and Bottom Line
Before you sign the purchase order, run through these five checks:
- Transformer spec is signed off by an electrical engineer.
- GE Multilin 850 model matches the I/O and communication requirements.
- Relay settings file exists or is included in the vendor's scope.
- Control panel builder has transformer protection panel experience, not just a general panel shop.
