In late October 2024, the maintenance lead at our plant leaned into my office and said, "We need a Mitsubishi PLC. FX5U. And a couple of battery chargers while you're at it."
I'm the office administrator for a 150-person plant. I've handled purchasing since 2020—roughly $200K a year across a dozen vendors. Maybe $180K, I'd have to check our system. The point is, I know how to buy things. I know how to compare quotes, chase invoices, and check whether a vendor can actually invoice properly before I commit. I wrote "FX5U" on a sticky note and nodded as if I'd been ordering PLCs my whole life. The maintenance lead went back to the floor. I turned to Google.
When I Didn't Know What a PLC Actually Was
Searching "mitsubishi plc" answered everything except the things that mattered. There's the FX3U, the FX5U, the Q series, the R series, and an A series that someone on a forum said was discontinued years ago. They all look like gray plastic boxes with rows of little lights. I had no way to know which one I needed—which, I now realize, was exactly the problem.
I did pick up one useful fact that night: the FX5U is programmed with GX Works3, while the older FX3U uses GX Works2. Two completely different software packages. I didn't understand why that mattered, but I filed it away. It came back to save me a week later.
Meanwhile, two smaller requests joined the same P.O. The environmental team wanted an AA solar battery charger for sensors they were testing along the fence line. The maintenance techs asked for a 2amp battery charger for their portable battery packs—"not the trickle charger," they said, "we've had problems with those." I added them to the list without thinking twice. They looked simple next to the PLC.
Finding a Mitsubishi PLC Distributor (I Thought)
I searched "mitsubishi plc distributor" and called the first three results that looked official. The first one that answered was friendly and confident. "Sure, we carry Mitsubishi PLCs."
I told him we needed an FX5U. He didn't ask whether we needed relay or transistor output. Didn't ask how many input/output points the application required. Didn't ask whether we'd need GX Works3, or a programming cable, or any documentation. He just said "we can get that" and quoted me a number.
To be fair, it was the cheapest quote I received. I remember feeling efficient: three calls, one clear winner, moving on. In hindsight, comparing three quotes for "some Mitsubishi PLC" is like comparing three bids for "some vehicle" and assuming they're all the same truck.
I placed the order. I also asked about the chargers on the same call, since I was already writing one P.O. "AA solar battery charger? We have that. 2amp battery charger? We have that." Two minutes, done. I was so pleased with myself.
Actually, one detail stands out now: when I asked about the chargers, he didn't ask what kind of batteries they were for, or what charging current the techs needed, or the chemistry. "AA solar battery charger" and "2amp battery charger" were just SKUs to him. I assumed he'd sold dozens of them. Maybe he had. But he never once tried to match what I was describing to what the maintenance team actually needed.
The Call That Went Sideways
Three days later I called to confirm the delivery date. Our automation engineer heard my side of the conversation from his desk, and something made him stop typing.
"So the FX5U is confirmed?" I asked.
"Confirmed," the voice said.
"And it's the FX5U-32MT, right?" the engineer called out, loud enough for both of us to hear.

The engineer mouthed, ask what software it uses.
"What programming software does it run?" I asked.
Longer pause. "We can include the software."

I canceled the P.O. that afternoon. The reseller pushed back, but we'd caught it before anything shipped, and I hadn't signed anything beyond the P.O. itself. I still felt stupid.
In hindsight, that order was a slow-motion accident. Every step felt reasonable at the time: the distributor looked professional, the quote was normal, the chargers were an afterthought. The only reason it stopped is because someone who knew the domain happened to hear half of a phone call. I kept thinking about that on the drive home—one overheard question away from a $2,400 shelf-sitter and a maintenance lead explaining to my manager why the line update was delayed.
The Right Distributor (Almost by Accident)
The next day—in early November 2024—I went to the Mitsubishi Electric website and checked their distributor locator. I should have started there. It took one call to a listed Mitsubishi PLC distributor to see exactly what I'd missed.
The rep asked me which FX5U variant the maintenance team had spec'd. Relay or transistor output. How many I/O points. Whether we needed the programming software—and if so, whether to include a GX Works3 license or a trial version. I called the maintenance lead twice during that conversation. The second time, he said, "Wait—they're asking about GX Works3? Keep them. That's the right distributor."
The correct FX5U showed up at our dock four business days later. The phantom reseller had quoted two to three weeks, maybe more, for a part that might have shipped from who knows where, in whatever configuration they had in stock.
When the FX5U arrived, the maintenance lead opened the box, checked the label against the P.O., and gave me a single nod. For him, that nod probably cost zero effort. For me, it was the first time a piece of equipment made it from a conversation to the control cabinet without a reorder cycle in between.
The chargers landed in the same delivery, and they taught a smaller but similar lesson. The 2amp battery charger from the authorized distributor has a mode switch on the side: standard 2amp charging or trickle. The maintenance techs had specifically warned me to avoid the trickle-only version, and the rep had confirmed the mode switch without me even asking. The first reseller would have shipped me whatever SKU matched "2amp battery charger" in his catalog—if that.
And the AA solar battery charger? The engineer showed me how to use the battery charger the right way: the solar panel needs direct, angled sunlight, not a spot next to the window; and the charger's switch matters more than the label on the box. Reading the manual is cheaper than replacing a battery pack. I typed up a one-page note for the equipment folder and felt, for the first time, like I actually understood what we'd ordered.
I'm not an automation engineer. I still can't explain CC-Link or why some applications need relay output and others need transistor output. I can only speak to the purchasing side of this, which is where the near-miss happened.
The Checklist I Use Now
I've done two more PLC-related orders since then—an FX5U expansion module and a spare power supply. Both went smoothly because I followed the same steps. Here's what I'd pass on to whoever inherits the purchasing role:
- Start with the manufacturer's official distributor list. For Mitsubishi PLCs, that's the Mitsubishi Electric website. One phone call tells you more than ten pages of search results.
- Write down the exact model number and read it back. Not "FX5U." The full designation, including I/O count and output type. If you don't know it, ask before calling.
- Ask the internal expert what the part is for. If the person requesting it can't explain the basics in plain words, dig deeper. Five minutes now saves five weeks later.
- Let the distributor confirm the specs back to you. If they can't talk about the software, the mounting, or the wiring, that's your answer before you order.
- Apply the same rule to accessories. A 2amp battery charger and a trickle charger are not interchangeable just because both charge batteries. An AA solar battery charger is not a bench charger. Confirm current, chemistry, and charge mode on every order.
Was that first attempt a waste? Partly. But I needed to hear a reseller dodge questions before the authorized distributor's questions made sense. Some things are hard to appreciate until you've seen the flimsy version.
This routine works for us because we're a single-site plant with a small maintenance team and a purchasing function that sits in the same building as the equipment. If you're juggling multiple locations or seasonal demand spikes, the calculus might be different. The basic habit—verify the source, read back the model number, let the distributor prove they know the product—travels well, though.
If you're an admin who's been handed a PLC model number and told to "order it," I see you. You don't need to become an automation expert overnight. You need to ask the questions that make real experts—and real distributors—step forward. And if anyone tells you the FX5U and FX3U are "basically the same," hang up.
