I've Burned $2,300 on PLC Logic Controllers and IGBT Modules. Transparent Specs Would've Prevented It.

I've personally approved about $2,300 in component purchases that ended up in a scrap bin since 2017. Not from bad engineering — from bad transparency. On datasheets. On compatibility claims. On what the quoted price actually included. So let me state my position plainly: a supplier who lists every specification and every fee upfront is more trustworthy than one who wins the quote and reveals the rest later. That's not a purchasing preference. That's risk management.

I'm a controls engineer at NexaFlow, an electrical equipment manufacturer. I spec and source PLC logic controllers, IGBT modules, and DC amplifier boards for transformer test stations and power conversion prototypes. Roughly 60 orders over six years, mostly mid-range industrial gear. I've made the classic mistakes — and documented them so the rest of the team doesn't repeat them. I now maintain our pre-purchase checklist, which exists because I got tired of writing post-mortems.

The IGBT60N60 "Direct Equivalent" That Wasn't

September 2022. I needed 40 pieces of IGBT60N60 — a 60A, 600V device we'd used in the same PWM driver circuit for years. The supplier offered a "direct equivalent" at 15% less: IGBT 50T65FD1. I compared two numbers on the summary sheet: current rating and voltage rating. Both looked fine. So I approved the order.

The IGBT 50T65FD1 is a genuinely good part — 50A, 650V, field-stop trench. It's just not a drop-in for that circuit. The gate charge was different. The internal diode's reverse recovery behavior was different. And at the 16 kHz switching frequency we run, the higher conduction loss made the modules run progressively hotter. Eight of the 40 failed within two weeks. Not a spectacular explosion — just slow overheating until the bond wires lifted. We caught it when the test rig's current waveform started looking fuzzy on the scope.

Here's the part I still kick myself over. I weighed the risk before ordering. The upside was roughly $720 off the order. The downside was a redo, maybe $900 in replacement parts and a slip in our test schedule. I told myself the supplier had tested the substitution. They hadn't. (Mental note: a summary table is not a spec sheet.)

That error cost $890 in redo and a one-week delay. The manufacturer's datasheet for the 50T65FD1 contained everything I needed to predict the issue. It was public. It was accurate. I just didn't ask for it until after the units failed.

The "PLC for Beginners" Logic Controller That Cost More Than the Next Size Up

Back in 2018, I was a genuine PLC beginner. I searched for "PLC for beginners" and found a small logic controller at an incredible price: $199. The listing said "programming software included." What it didn't say was that "included" meant a trial version which refused to execute more than 50 program blocks. The full software license cost $280. The programming cable was $140, because it used a proprietary interface instead of a standard USB port. The manual worth reading was another $90.

I hit "confirm order" and immediately thought: did I just lock myself into a dead-end platform? I didn't relax until the box arrived. Then I couldn't run the demo program, and the knot came right back.

Total: $709 for a learning toy. The brand-name starter kit I bought after returning it included a real PLC machine, a full software license, a standard cable, and a decent manual — $780. For $71 more, I got a logic controller I still use on bench projects, plus a distributor who answers the phone. The return carried a 15% restocking fee, so add another $30.

The lesson wasn't "buy expensive." It was: the price is the total price. When a supplier breaks out every cost upfront, you can compare two offers honestly. When they don't, you're not comparing products — you're gambling on what's missing.

The DC Amplifier Board With Fine Print

This one is recent, so it still stings. In early 2024, we ordered 20 DC amplifier boards for a signal-conditioning upgrade on one of the high-current test benches. The board was inexpensive — $18.50 each, pre-assembled, tiny footprint. The product page said "wide supply range" and "overload protection." Sounded like exactly what we needed.

What the 40-page manual mentioned — on page 31, I'm not joking — was that the negative supply rail had to be energized before the positive rail, or the input stage would latch up. Our bench used a single shared supply. Three boards died during commissioning before we found that paragraph. The manufacturer's support took two days per reply. Expedited replacements cost $156. The bench sat idle for two days.

Let me do the math the way I should have done it before ordering: 20 boards at $18.50 each is $370. Add $156 in expedited replacements and two days of technician time, and the "cheap" board ended up costing more than the premium board I'd skipped because it was $9 more per unit.

No specs on that product page were technically false. But the presentation made the board look like a plug-and-play module, and it wasn't. I've changed my default question since then. I no longer ask "what's the price?" first. I ask what's NOT included in this description? — both in terms of features and in terms of costs.

"But Transparent Suppliers Are More Expensive"

I hear this objection every time I explain my rule. And I used to believe it myself.

Here's the thing, though. Per FTC business guidance (ftc.gov), advertising claims have to be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence. That's the legal floor. But nothing in that guidance forces a seller to volunteer the details that determine whether a part works in your application. A supplier can be completely truthful and still leave out the gate charge, the software license price, or the supply sequencing requirement.

So a transparent quote often looks higher because it includes the test report, the license, the protection circuit, and the support call. A non-transparent quote looks lower because those items simply aren't there yet. They show up later, on a change order or a restocking fee.

Is there a case where a transparent supplier is genuinely more expensive, line by line? Sure. I've hit that too. But in my experience, the premium buys you fewer surprises. I do not mean a 5% premium on commodity parts — I mean paying a bit more to a supplier who answers technical questions with actual numbers and sends a datasheet before they send an invoice. That trade has paid for itself every single time.

My experience is based on about 60 orders in the mid-range industrial segment, mostly test equipment and prototypes. If you're buying for avionics, medical devices, or grid protection, your verification bar is — and should be — much higher. But the habit of asking what's not included scales up, not down.

So here's where I land: transparency — in specs, in compatibility claims, in pricing — is not a soft virtue. It's the cheapest risk-reduction tool I have as a buyer. The supplier who hands me the full datasheet and the full price is letting me check their work. I'd rather buy from someone who lets me check their work. The other kind has already cost me $2,300.
