Siemens Contactor Guide: What Is an Electrical Contactor and Why 22E Isn’t Enough

Reading a forum thread about a Kawasaki oil filter 49065 cross reference taught me something about industrial control gear. Not about oil filters—about how people choose parts when the part number is incomplete.

The thread had the usual list of substitute filters. Then someone asked: What is the bypass valve pressure on the 49065? The thread went quiet. Nobody knew. The cross-reference was based on visible dimensions, not on the specs that actually matter for a filter. That is exactly the pattern I see when people choose a Siemens contactor.

I’m a quality manager at an industrial controls distributor. Every week, I review contactor orders before they ship. Wrong coil voltage, missing auxiliary contacts, or a contactor relay where a power contactor was needed. The mistakes were rarely made by one careless person. What is an electrical contactor?

Let’s start with the basics. An electrical contactor is a remotely controlled switch for power circuits. Inside the contactor, an electromagnetic coil pulls a set of contacts closed when the coil is energized. When the coil is de-energized, spring force opens them. That simple action lets a small PLC output or a push button manage a much larger motor load.

The key word is switch. A contactor is designed to switch loads on and off under normal conditions. In a motor starter, it is usually paired with an overload relay. The overload relay protects the motor from sustained running current. The contactor does the switching. They are separate functions, and that distinction matters.

Siemens has two separate product groups that people often confuse: power contactors and contactor relays. A Siemens contactor relay—often from the 3TH or 3RH family—has multiple auxiliary contacts and is used in control circuits. It switches control signals, not motor current. A power contactor like the Sirius 3RT family switches the main circuit. You can use a contactor relay to pilot a power contactor, but you cannot substitute one for the other.

Under IEC 60947-4-1, contactors are classified by utilization categories. The one you will see most often is AC-3, which covers starting and stopping squirrel-cage motors. If your application involves reversing or jogging, you may need an AC-4 rating. I mention this because a lower-rated contactor can appear to work for months before the contacts fail.

Every so often someone lands here searching for a dual pole circuit breaker. They’re usually trying to solve a switching problem. Here’s the distinction: a circuit breaker is a protective device. It interrupts fault currents and protects wiring. A contactor is a switching device. It makes and breaks a load circuit repeatedly under control.

A dual pole breaker upstream of a Siemens contactor is normal practice. Using that breaker to switch a motor on and off is not. The breaker can handle overcurrent, but it is not designed for frequent operation, and it does not have a control coil. If you are building a motor starter, you need a contactor and an overload relay. The breaker is there for protection, not control.

Now we get to the part that I wish more people took seriously. In a maintenance store, you might hear someone ask for “the Siemens 22E contactor.” I have heard that exact phrase. I understand what they mean: they want a legacy 3TF contactor in that frame size. But the phrase 22E does not tell you the coil voltage. It does not tell you whether the coil is 50 Hz or 60 Hz. It does not tell you whether the auxiliary contact block is integrated or add-on. The complete catalog number, printed on the side of the device, does.

I have had to turn away orders because the only description was “Siemens 22E contactor.” The person on the other end was frustrated, but the next morning they found the nameplate and we shipped the right part. The nameplate is the source of truth. The shorthand is not.

  • Auxiliary contacts: How many N/O and N/C do you need? Do you need early break, mirror contacts, or safe isolation?
  • Conductor termination: Rail size, screw or spring terminals, and connection capacity. A contactor that fits electrically but not physically can still fail an inspection.
  • Approvals and standards: Check IEC 60947-4-1, UL 60947-4-1, or the relevant regional approval for the end market.

The bottom line

Look, I don’t want to make this sound harder than it is. If you already have the full catalog number and the data sheet, buying a Siemens contactor is straightforward. The hard part is deciding whether you trust the half-specs in front of you. For a contactor, the ending point is a verified part number, an approval that matches your market, and a delivery date you can rely on.
